A Weekend of Learning, Energy, and World-Class Judo
The 2026 San Jose Training Camp, hosted by Judo United, once again brought the California judo community together for an unforgettable weekend at The Plex in San Jose. With more than 250 athletes, coaches, and families attending from clubs across the state, the event delivered exactly what it promised—high-level instruction, great energy on the mats, and a powerful sense of community.
World-Class Instruction
The teen and adult sessions were led by European Champion and World Silver Medalist Tommy Macias, whose dynamic approach to judo left a strong impression on everyone in attendance. Macias shared a wide range of insights drawn from his international competitive career, focusing on non-traditional applications and creative variations of techniques that many athletes had never considered before.
Participants were treated to detailed breakdowns of gripping strategies, movement patterns, and tactical adjustments that can turn common positions into scoring opportunities. The sessions were packed with information, yet Macias presented everything in a way that was approachable and engaging. Coaches and athletes alike walked away with new ideas to bring back to their own dojos.
Inspiring the Next Generation
The 12-and-under camp was led by Nicki Graczyk of Germany, alongside Toni Lettner, creating an outstanding learning environment for the youngest judoka.
These sessions struck the perfect balance between fun, movement, and technical development. Graczyk and Lettner did an excellent job keeping the kids fully engaged throughout the training while introducing key judo concepts in a way that made sense for young athletes. The mat was filled with smiles, laughter, and plenty of energetic randori as kids developed their skills alongside new friends from around the state.
Parents and coaches consistently praised the youth sessions for being both insightful and enjoyable, helping young athletes build confidence while reinforcing strong fundamentals.
A Community Gathering
One of the most special aspects of the San Jose Training Camp is the opportunity for the broader judo community to come together. With athletes representing clubs from throughout California, the weekend felt like a true celebration of the sport.
Between technical sessions and randori, athletes had the chance to train with new partners, exchange ideas, and strengthen connections across the judo community.
By the end of the weekend, a common question echoed throughout the venue:
“When will we get to see these coaches back in California again?”
The Plex: A Perfect Home for Judo
The event was once again hosted at The Plex in San Jose, a venue that is quickly becoming synonymous with high-caliber judo events in Northern California.
Families and athletes appreciate the facility’s spacious layout, modern amenities, and comfortable environment. With plenty of room for training and a wide range of activities available within the complex, The Plex continues to be a favorite destination for both parents and kids.
Looking Ahead
Events like the San Jose Training Camp are a big part of Judo United’s mission to bring world-class experiences to the judo community. The combination of elite international instruction, enthusiastic young athletes, and strong support from clubs across the state made this year’s camp one of the most successful yet.
If the energy on the mats was any indication, the California judo community is already looking forward to the next opportunity to train together.
And judging by the conversations at the end of the weekend, one thing is clear:
Everyone is hoping Tommy Macias & Nicki Graczyk, will be back soon.
