Zoltan Bathory & Joe Marchal to attend Golden State Open!

Judo United is excited to announce that the prestigious Most Outstanding Athlete selections for the 2026 Golden State Open IJF Junior divisions will be made by two extraordinary figures from the martial arts world: Joe Marchal and Zoltan Bathory.

The Most Outstanding Athlete honors will be awarded to one male and one female competitor competing in the IJF Junior divisions. These awards carry an extraordinary opportunity beyond recognition alone.

The two selected athletes will receive a fully sponsored, all-expenses-paid position in the Baku Experience, a groundbreaking international program developed through the collaboration between the International Judo Federation and Judo United.

The Baku Experience will provide athletes with an unforgettable journey to the 2026 World Judo Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. Winners will receive roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations, and access to the World Championships while taking part in a unique behind-the-scenes and cultural exchange experience designed to immerse young athletes in the highest levels of international judo.

Joe Marchal represented Team USA at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea and remains one of the most respected figures in American judo. His decades of experience as an elite athlete and mentor bring tremendous credibility to the selection process.

Zoltan Bathory is an entrepreneur, brand builder, lifelong judoka, and founder/guitarist of the internationally successful band Five Finger Death Punch. Beyond his achievements in music, Bathory has maintained a deep connection to martial arts and has become a passionate advocate for supporting judo and athlete development.

Together, these two accomplished leaders bring a unique perspective and passion to the Golden State Open. Their selection of the Most Outstanding Athletes elevates an award designed to recognize not only competitive excellence, but also the determination, spirit, and character that define great judoka.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Joe and Zoltan to the 2026 Golden State Open,” said Eric Sanchez, the director of the Golden State Open.  “Having individuals with this level of experience and influence involved creates an incredible opportunity for our athletes. The fact that these awards also open the door to the Baku Experience makes this even more special.”
